AI is creeping into everyday workflows, whether your team realizes it or not. Someone’s using ChatGPT to clean up an email. Someone else installed a browser extension to summarize meeting notes.
Not everyone on your team needs to understand how a large language model works. But they do need to know what tools are being used, what risks they carry, and when to ask questions.
Here’s how to start closing the gap:
1. Talk about AI like a normal tool
Treat it the way you would treat cloud apps or new messaging platforms. What does it do? Who’s using it? What kind of data touches it?
2. Give examples from your own environment
Don’t make it abstract. Show your team where AI tools are already in play, whether it’s for marketing content, data cleanup, or writing documentation.
3. Map the risk to the role
Finance tools pulling in sensitive numbers. HR platforms filtering resumes. AI that autocompletes help desk replies. These aren’t theoretical. They’re part of the daily workflow.
4. Fold AI into existing security training
No need for a separate track. Just add AI prompts into phishing simulations, access control reviews, or policy refreshers. The point is to normalize the idea that AI can be a risk factor.
5. Create space for questions
People won’t speak up if they feel like they should already know the answer. Build a culture where “what does this tool actually do?” is a welcome question.
